"Back in 2013 I began my journey with Waterford College of Further Education. Following some health issues and being made redundant due to a factory closure I found myself soul searching for a career change. I felt at the time that I wanted to enter the beauty industry but I wasn't 100% sure which side of the industry. I applied for the part time ITEC Make Up Certificate Course with tutor Claire Egan. I absolutely loved the course. From the minute I walked through the doors I was made feel at home. No question was ever too big or small.
The Certificate course flew by and before I knew it exam season was upon me. As I was unsure about where I wanted to take this new found love for beauty, I took a few months out to start a beauty blog Rachels Boutique which has gone from strength to strength, most recently reaching the final 10 in the Irish Beauty Blog Awards.
I applied for the Full Time Beauty Therapy Course following completion of the ITEC Make Up Certificate. In September 2015 the most exciting journey of my life to date began. It was like I never left when I walked back through the doors. The bustling corridors in the midst of that homely feel to the building.
Following successful qualifications in Cibtac, I progressed onto the next level Year 2 of the Beauty Therapy course. From the get go in September 2016 the main focus was on aiming to achieve that ultimate goal of a CIDESCO Qualification. The tutors went above and beyond expectation to help you achieve the qualification. You really do get out what you put in. Year 2 proved to be one of the most exhilarating times. I gained my CIDESCO Qualification but also CIDESCO Student of the Year. Exams finished on a Thursday afternoon in May, I began working the next morning in a salon in Waterford City where I was covering holiday leave.
I was confident to work on clients right from the start due to the care & attention I received from my tutors. 3 months later and even though life was good, they say if opportunity comes knocking answer the door, and that I did. Beauty Therapy Tutor Gillian Norris offered me a position in her prestigious salon in Kilmacthomas, Co. Waterford.
I had the opportunity to work for one of my previous mentors. Salon Belleza, Kilmacthomas welcomed me through the doors and I have never looked back, it has been a very exciting nine months with more exciting times to come. If you love what you do you will never work a day in your life, and this applies to Salon Belleza, the combination of clients and a great mentor makes it a joy to go to work everyday.
From the beginning to the end of my time in the college I can honestly say it was an amazing experience. While maintaining a very professional approach to teaching, there was also a great sense of warmth from the tutors which made learning such a pleasurable experience."
