About Our Complementary and Spa Qualifications

Complementary therapy is a rewarding career for people who enjoy the holistic wellbeing of their clients and can offer fantastic opportunities to benefit individuals and the wider community. To add to this, the global ‘wellness industry’ is said to be valued at $3.72 trillion USD, having grown 10% from 2013-2015 (according to data published by the Global Wellness Institute), providing an increasing number of employment opportunities internationally for therapists with complementary qualifications.

The spa sector is one of the fastest growing in the industry, currently said to be worth £81 billion globally and forecast to reach £85.4 billion by 2020 (according to data published by the Global Wellness Institute). Qualified spa therapists will find a variety employment opportunities both at home and abroad if they want to travel, with new day spas and luxury holiday destination spas opening regularly around the world.

Complementary Therapies

Complementary therapists provide popular treatments for relaxing and pampering at beauty salons and spas. Complementary therapists may also find employment within the health services (such as the NHS in the UK) providing valuable support to doctors’ services, long-term hospital patients, within hospices and care homes. Self-employed complementary therapists often have bust practices within therapy centres, from home, or as a mobile service.

Study of complementary therapy begins at Level 3. Learners over the age of 18 can enter at this level or choose to progress from beauty Level 2 into complementary therapy.

Spa Qualifications

The global trend for wellness means that clients are becoming more in tune with the link between inner health and outer beauty, and look for the holistic benefits of spa treatments to provide them with a glowing, healthy appearance. Spa treatments cover massage services, water treatments using hydro equipment (such as flotation tanks, safe operation of sauna and steam facilities, invigorating weight loss treatments and relaxing shower treatments). Students will also discover how to apply body wraps, scrubs and masks and the benefits of these.

Study of spa therapies begins at Level 3, and students can enter at this level. Holding beauty qualifications is useful in order to add greater flexibility to potential employers, so progression from Level 2 beauty into spa is a popular route.
